Paper and Granite is a collection of poetry placed on paper over a two year period following the passing of my mother. It explores the pain felt by the loss of very dear loved one and ventures to dare to look beyond the stones in order to remain involved in the life that continues, my own. It touches on the concept of an after-life with the sometimes strange, little, not so insignificant things that happen when ones mind is coping with emotions so strong. It comes full circle with the realization that even though it may feel like it at times, we "who live to carry on" were not the ones who died when those we loved moved on.
Editorial Review:
Between our first paper and our final granite markings, our lives evolve. During this limited time on earth, we garner numerous experiences, some of which may hinder our vision and change our perceptions without our awareness. The death of a loved one is one such tragedy that can blind, sometimes completely.
In this volume of primarily free verse poetry, author David J. Gluck addresses this challenge we all experience sometime in our lives. The work, a two-year journey through grief, conveys Gluck's feelings as he discovers how to live an engaging life after the death of his mother.
Communicating in a strong narrative voice, the poems in Paper and Granite: Between the Markings offer a serious presentation of significant thoughts and emotions. Gluck reminds us that we must never forget those who affected us and made us who we are. Nevertheless, we must learn to see beyond the stones no matter how difficult this may be.
Mourning Clouds
Broken clouds are gorgeous at sunset but eastern clouds more so at dawn. It’s Providence’s way of saying you have another chance to say how much you love her, how you couldn’t live a minute knowing she wouldn’t be there, how empty and foolish you feel while watching the sunset each eve through broken clouds in complete awe and total silence after having been away all day at work or play and night before in dream.
Inside the Glass
The porch is fallen down the eave is leaning peeled white siding bares holes for birds and rabbits and squirrels. Window screens torn yet most panes of glass remain glittering through the ivy coverings capturing visions of a past inside where dogs and cats and hamsters played while parents grew wiser, marking places in the kitchen doorway after a Sunday dinner while evening landed on the outside settling dust from day’s events and pages turned inside the glass as eyes closed heavily and children dreamt the dreams children dream.
